My preschooler loves escalators. They fascinate him, great big metallic machines that carry people up and down. When we go shopping and he spies an escalator, he begs to go on it instead of the elevator. Yet, when we are in front of the escalator and it is time to step on, he hesitates. I watch his face, he is waiting for that perfect moment to get on. I know he is afraid of falling, so he waits and waits. Each step passes him by, he steps aside to let others get on and he still waits for that perfect moment. After watching him for a minute, I gently ask him if he would like me to help get on. He nods yes and I pick him up and put him on the first step.
Taking the first step in pursuing a business is scary. You conduct research to see if there is any interest. You look into business formation requirements. You may join groups to bounce ideas off of people or read books to find out what not to do. And yet, with all this busy work, you still have not taken that first step to getting your business off the ground.
If you wait for the perfect moment, it will never come. Yes, you want to be prepared! But you don’t want to wait forever and let others pass you by, as you continually wait, telling yourself that the perfect moment is a-l-m-o-s-t there.
Sometimes you need help, like a coach. You could ask a friend to help you but unless your friend shares the same mindset as you, chances are your friend may not give you the motivation you need.
I seek out challenges. Most are 30 days long, which is just enough time to get you off your butt and get going!
